JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, analytical, consultative and results driven technical professional to join our team in the role of Model Developer at our downtown Toronto location.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Model Development & Analytics, the Model Developer will build and enhance best-in-class electricity market models and use analytical tools to ensure the efficient, reliable, and affordable generation of low-carbon electricity in Ontario. The models include but are not limited to: electricity demand forecasting, optimization of power system planning, simulation of electricity generation and transmission, and forecast of electricity prices, fuel consumptions and emissions, generation revenues and profit margins. Other applications include building and enhancing analytical tools and software systems to address portfolio optimization problems such as water management in hydroelectric generation, fuel procurement, and bidding strategies implementation.

This position requires a strong aptitude for computer programming, mathematical modelling, and statistics.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Long-term demand forecast models : Develop, calibrate, and maintain long-term electricity demand forecast models, conduct analytical studies on drivers of electric demand such as weather, technologies, policies, renewable generation and conservation programs.

Everyday tools for participation in IESO market: Develop tools for OPG’s Commercial Operations team to implement bidding strategies for the IESO administered electricity market, including but not limited to: analysis of business requirements, design and implementation of data structure and storage; design and development of Windows desktop application; development and deployment of Web API in Azure cloud.

System planning optimization: Develop and enhance models that optimize long term electricity system expansion, utilizing state-of-the-art modelling techniques and optimization tools and algorithms.

Electricity market simulation: Develop and enhance models to reflect changing system dynamics and emerging policies affecting electricity market. Improve productivity and usability. And reconcile model projections. Support internal users of the models.

Analytical support: Utilize models and apply advanced quantitative methods to estimate the costs and benefits of OPG’s strategic initiatives and new business development opportunities. Evaluate the impact of new market rules and government proposed & new policies. Communicate analytical results internally and externally. Maintain stakeholder relationships and contacts with relevant experts in the industry to keep abreast of methodological advances.

EDUCATION

  • At least 4 years of university plus at least 1 year of further concentrated study.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid work environment

  • Requires demonstrated experience in using commercial software such as Matlab, Visual Studio(C#, VB.NET), and SQL Server to handle massive data sets and optimization problems, as well as proficiency in MS Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

  • Requires experience in the application of quantitative numerical methods. Preferred experience in the analysis of risks in competitive power markets and portfolio optimization in the power sector.

  • Requires experience in the application of electrical fundamentals, supply options, physical power system operation and optimization, market rules, market dynamics, market behaviors and economic principles to be able to translate that into enhancements of existing electricity market models and analytical tools.

  • Successful candidate is expected to become familiar with the organization, electricity marketplace competition and their interrelationship with OPG trading activities.

  • A period of over 6 years and up to and including 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
